Sexuality Is More Than Sex: #2 Why Can It Be So Difficult to Talk About Sexuality?
2. Why Can It Be So Difficult to Talk About Sexuality?
Many of us grow up learning what is acceptable to discuss and what should remain private. We may receive messages about sex, relationships and gender from our families, schools, religious communities, friends or the media.
Some messages help us develop healthy values and boundaries. Others may leave us feeling embarrassed, fearful or uncertain about our own experiences. You might find yourself thinking:
“Is it normal for me to feel this way?”
“What if my partner does not understand me?”
“Am I wrong for having these thoughts?”
“How do I talk about something that I have never discussed openly?”
“What if sharing this changes how someone sees me?”
When these questions remain unspoken, it can become difficult to distinguish between what we genuinely believe, what we have been taught and what we fear others might think of us. The goal is not to dismiss your values or tell you what you should believe. Rather, it is to give yourself an opportunity to understand your experiences, consider your choices and make decisions that are consistent with your well-being.
